About those Huntsville Housing Authority #AllLivesMatter to prevent another #Ferguson Summits....

Butler Terrace in Huntsville.JPG
The Butler Terrace public housing development along Governors Drive will host an "All Lives Matter" town hall meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 27. (Eric Schultz | eschultz@al.com)

SoThe Executive Director of the Huntsville Housing Authority thought it would be a good idea to host a series of town halls for residents of public housing, the majority of whom are black, to prevent another #Ferguson from happening here.
Lundy said Huntsville police will be on hand to talk about why officers might stop someone for questioning, and how those being questioned are expected to act.
Translation:   We are going to teach you public housing residents how to be good Negroes.
Lundy said Huntsville Housing Authority employees plan to work with the police department to create a one-page list of "do's" and "don'ts" for teenagers who may encounter an officer.
"We want to it be trt of thing that mothers and aunts and grandmothers can disseminate to their children, and maybe hang on their refrigerator," he told AL.com Monday. "I've had that conversation with my son, but a lot of the youth we serve haven't had that discussion.""We're just trying to de-escalate what could occur."
This is the mentality and behavior that needs to addressed IMHO
A Florida National Guard sergeant arrived at the shooting range on a Saturday last month for training and recognized her brother's 15-year-old booking photo among the bullet-riddled targets left behind by North Miami Beach police officers, the station said.

It doesn't matter how many things black mothers, aunts, and grandmothers hang on their refrigerators and disseminate to their children if police automatically assume they are criminals and are spooked by their very existence

And they wonder why we fear the police?

Anyone can twist and turn this into the police being bad all they want but the "truth" needs to be told. When police stop someone they need to interact as in a way not to seem demeaning of an officer doing his job! ie like why you stopping me cause I am black etc etc etc. If you are doing nothing WRONG then there is nothing to worry about!! Police have interactions with people daily and 99.9999% those go good!

There are many people in the community who try to get a reaction from police like the video from Birmingham you have on an earlier post! Many go out of their way to antagonize officers into a bad reaction! WHY? So they can say police are bad look what they did etc. We also have many who think they know the law when in fact they do not! There are municipal laws, state laws and federal laws that are on the books. A little courtesy goes a LONG WAY when dealing with police! We also have to remember that many people that are getting stopped and checked in the housing areas in because someone in that area (black) called police to complain!! so they person checked should be mad at the (black) person who called and complained! It is a deeper issue the lets blame the police for all that is bad in our black community!!!

I agree.I think it is a good idea for police to speak to those who will show up and listen. The police can explain why they are there, why they check people, etc and what the local Huntsville laws are and what they usually enforce in those areas, what things might get you checked, stopped etc and to those raising the kids how to teach them respect for police and for others and that may go along way. Respect for adults, teachers and others may lead to respect for police when their is an interaction in the community and that respect will solve a lot of the problems that are now on going.

To say citizens who live in public housing don't know why police are there, what the local Huntsville laws are, and what things might get them checked, stopped, etc, and are not raising kids, and that their kids don't show respect for police and others is like say all white people are racist.

Thanks for proving my point, these meetings are about about reinforcing media driven racial stereotypes.

Redeye said...

PS They already know why they are being checked, stopped, etc..... because of the color of their skin.

Anonymous said...

They are not checked due to their skin color! The meeting to prevent another Ferguson is simple....OBEY COMMANDS GIVEN BY POLICE! If they say put your hands behind your back do it etc do not resist etc then if you fee, you have been done wrong go complain! Some citizens do not know the laws and that they may be breaking a law and that is why they got stopped. You put words in my mouth I never said! There are several city laws I never knew! You can not sit on a sidewalk! You can not loiter on a street corner etc maybe if you knew some city, state or federal laws then you would stop defending a criminal when they get checked!Yes there are some good people in the city housing areas and they are the ones who will probably show up for the meeting and they are the ones who usually do not commit crime and do not need to hear anything said at the meeting. The criminal element that needs to be there most likely will not be there so is the meeting really helping?!

Anonymous said...

You can not spit on a sidewalk I meant to say.

There are those who are glad police are in the area to help control crime. We both know housing areas are a high crime area! You can pull the crime stats at he court house!!

Anonymous said...

WRONG Most of the crime in those areas comes from people that visit, hangout loiter etc

Redeye said...

To say most of the crime in "those areas" comes from people that visit, hangout loiter etc. is like saying most of "those" who live, visit, hangout, loiter etc. in south Huntsville are bigots.

Anonymous said...

If those in the south side are hanging on street corners and walking up to cars all day back and forth and then shootings start to occur as well as other crimes then yes that would also be a problem but those things are not occurring on street corners in south Huntsville hence not many shootings and crimes on those streets!

Redeye said...

If those on the north sides are lighting torches, burning crosses, shooting and lynching black people while waving their Confederate Flags that would also be a problem but those thing are not occurring in north Huntsville hence not many hate crimes on those streets!

Anonymous said...

True as those have not occurred in 50 years are so! My point being police concentrate their effort where crime occurs. Read into that anyway you like. Here in Huntsville we have many shootings in the high crime high drug areas mostly west and north Huntsville. Yes I know we had shootings/murders in the South of Huntsville but the true reality is that most violent crime in Huntsville occurs in North Huntsville all I have to do is watch the news! There have been numerous shootings. I'm not even including murders just shootings at homes, cars or people where they did not die!STATS don't lie. Again your article is good but we need to address the interaction our young people have with police when they are stopped!!!!We need to teach respect not only toward police but teachers and other adults!

Redeye said...

Truth of the matter is most hate crimes occur in South Huntsville. Respect is a two way street, police need to address their interactions with black/brown/poor people and stop profiling them. Respect is earned not taught. Why should black/brown/poor people respect police officers who view them as thugs and criminals because of the color of their skin or their address?

Anonymous said...

NOT ALL POLICE DO THAT! Maybe 0001%!! Supreme Court has said police can criminal profile!

Would the advise being given by the police at the HHA meeting be any different if given to any other group?

Is the ACLU "teaching people how to be good negros" when they give advice on what to do if stopped / questioned by police or arrested by police.

https://www.aclu.org/drug-law-reform-immigrants-rights-racial-justice/know-your-rights-what-do-if-you

Redeye said...

The difference between what HHA is doing and what the ACLU is doing is this: The ACLU is educating people on their rights if stopped by the police. HHA is telling black/poor residents of public housing how to behave, because in their view, the only rights residents have is to stay black/brown/poor and HOPE they live through an interaction with police.

Brian said...

Isn't being told about something or how to do something a part of getting education about something?

Lundy doesn't say he going to tell people what to do but the goal of the meetings is to "maintain open lines of communication, deconstruct negativity and educate (in) an ever-evolving social climate."

http://www.al.com/news/index.ssf/2015/01/huntsville_housing_authority_a.html#incart_river

When does it go from telling somebody about something and education somebody about something?

Redeye said...

Lundy and HHA aren't going to tell residents they have the right to remain silent, can't be detained without probable cause, etc. Lundy and HPD are going to give residents "The Talk"
"What parents have done for decades who have children of color, especially young men of color, is train them to be very careful when they have a connection with a police officer," de Blasio said.

"It's different for a white child. That's just the reality in this country," de Blasio went on. "And with Dante, very early on with my son, we said, look, if a police officer stops you, do everything he tells you to do, don't move suddenly, don't reach for your cell phone, because we knew, sadly, there's a greater chance it might be misinterpreted if it was a young man of color."

De Blasio opinion is his opinion, it does not mean that it is fact. There are multiple studies out there that suggest the opposite of de Blasio's opinion is true.

From the Washington Times:

It’s widely assumed that white police officers are more likely to shoot black suspects as a result of racial bias, but recent research suggests the opposite is true.

An innovative study published in the Journal of Experimental Criminology found that participants in realistic simulations felt more threatened by black suspects yet took longer to pull the trigger on black men than on white or Hispanic men.

“This behavioral ‘counter-bias’ might be rooted in people’s concerns about the social and legal consequences of shooting a member of a historically oppressed racial or ethnic group,” said the paper, which went practically unnoticed when it was published online on May 22, but took on new significance in the wake of a series of high-profile police-involved shootings involving black victims over the summer.

The results back up what one of the researchers, University of Missouri-St. Louis professor David Klinger, has found after independently interviewing more than 300 police officers: While they don’t want to shoot anybody, they really don’t want to shoot black suspects.

“Across these 300 interviews, I have multiple officers telling me that they didn’t shoot only because the suspect was black or the suspect was a woman, or something that would not be consistent with this narrative of cops out there running and gunning,” said Mr. Klinger, a former cop and author of “Into the Kill Zone: A Cop’s Eye View of Deadly Force” (2006).

“When it comes to the issue of race, I’ve never had a single officer tell me, ‘I didn’t shoot a guy because he was white.’ I’ve had multiple officers tell me, ‘I didn’t shoot a guy because he was black,’ ” Mr. Klinger said. “And this is 10, even 20 years ago. Officers are alert to the fact that if they shoot a black individual, the odds of social outcry are far greater than if they shoot a white individual.”

If DeBlasio's opinion is his opnion and not a fact of life, why is the HHA sponsoring a How to be a Good Negro Summit for black/brown/poor residents of public housing? Why do black/brown/poor parents have to have "The Talk" with their children? If it's not a fact, why are police using mug shots of black teens for target practice? The numerous studies you cite that suggest the opposite of de Blasio's opinion is true don't know what they are talking about, but if it makes you feel better to believe these studies instead of the facts of life in America, have at it.

Why is HHA having these meetings? I have no concrete answers, could be the same reason when I worked for Domino's Pizza that the owners invited the Decatur Police to come and speak to us. It lowered the insurance premiums of the owners if they did.

Why do black/brown/poor parents have to have "The Talk" with their children? Same reason every parent has "The Talk" with their children. My parents had "The Talk" with me. Before I was allowed to drive on my own, I KNEW what to do if I was pulled over. You want your children to be safe.

Why was the North Miami Police using mug shots of criminals of all ages and races? Why do shooting ranges offer photo targets in addition to the normal outline target? It adds a level realism. Were the black teen's who's mug shots were used, were they "teens" of eighTEEN or nineTEEN? or were they juvinelles? or were they juvinelles that had been charged as adults?

Redeye said...

HHA says they are having the summits to "prevent another Ferguson from happening. As if public housing residents are to blame for Darren Wilson shooting and killing an unarmed teen in the middle of the street in broad daylight.

All parents don't have to have the same "Talk" with their children, but if it makes you feel better to believe they do, have at it.

The North Miami Police were using mug shots of African Americans Teens for target practice because they could, and because they buy into the media driven racial stereotype that all blacks are thugs and criminals.
