The "Ethical" Lynching of an Uppity Black Man

I guess the good white folks in Huntsville, Alabama are tired of District One City Councilman Richard Showers "uppity" ways, so they decided to put him in his place by filing a complaint with the Alabama Ethics (RedEye roll) Commission, because he robbed, raped and murdered the voters in his district, I mean, he put $40.00 of gasoline into his daughters automobile in the aftermath of the deadly tornadoes.
City Attorney Peter Joffrion reported the April 28 incident to the Alabama Ethics Commission on Friday. The Times obtained a copy of the two-page letter through an open records request.
According to the letter, Showers and his daughter drove in separate vehicles to a generator-powered city fueling station on Governors Drive -- one of the few places in town that had gas in the immediate aftermath of the storm. Two Huntsville police officers were posted there to ensure that only city employees providing "essential public services" got fuel.
The letter says Showers called City Administrator Rex Reynolds after being told he could not refuel both vehicles. Reynolds told Showers he could pump 10 gallons into his daughter's vehicle if he planned to use that car for city business.
"Showers replied that his daughter had followed him to the station and that he was not using her car for work," the letter states. "Again, Rex Reynolds informed Showers that he could not receive gas for his daughter's car."
Huntsville police Sgt. Mark Shahan, who was in line behind Showers, told the councilman he could pump 10 gallons into his personal vehicle.
After Shahan drove off, the letter says, Showers directed the 10 gallons to be pumped into his daughter's car.
Showers later repaid the city for the cost of the fuel -- about $40 -- and has "apologized profusely for compromising the affected city employees and his position," according to the letter.

Seriously? Forty dollars of gasoline in a council members daughters car in the aftermath of deadly tornado warrants the filing of an ethics report? Let's go "inside the story" and find out.
Let’s be clear here: What Councilman Showers did is far worse than merely taking advantage of his position for selfish gain. He took advantage of his position during a declared state of emergency. His conduct was arrogant, selfish, and criminal. Furthermore, his daughter is a public school teacher and should have known better than to go along with this. But one has to wonder if she is not accustomed to getting special treatment due to her father’s position.
Want some irony? In Thursday night’s city council meeting, the city was poised to award a contract for wrecker services to a local company. Showers objected, accused the company owner of unethical conduct, and tried to get the council to award the contract to a company in his district that had submitted a higher bid.

Isn't it "ironic" that after Showers objected to the awarding of a contract at and accused the company owner of unethical conduct on Thursday, an ethics violation report is filed against him on Friday? Mind you we don't know the specifics of the accusations or unethical conduct, but the mere fact a black man had the audacity to accuse someone of unethical conduct is grounds for them being taken down a peg. Who owns the Wrecker Service? Who will benefit economically from the contract? Is it a local company? So many questions, so few answers.

Since reconstruction, there has always an issue of minorities getting their fair share of state, federal and local contract dollars. The federal government has attempted to rectify this by establishing minority small business development programs, in addition to legislation, to mitigate this reality. The fact is, those who make spending decisions most often are not minorities, and consequently their choice of who gets a piece of the pie consistently excludes minority businesses.

Is this a high-tech lynching of an uppity black man? I say yes because we only have one side of the story since ironically Showers was not immediately available for comment. Where is all that post-storm coming goodwill? Of all the things to file an ethics complaint about, this ain't it.
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Huntsville city officials self-reported an incident involving fraudulent dispensing of gasoline to the state ethics board Wednesday, officials said.In a statement released by city officials, an internal review was done following the power outage from the tornadoes two weeks ago. The review found that during the outage, less than 10 gallons of city gasoline was dispensed improperly. The release said the value of the gasoline has since been repaid to the city, but officials reported it to the Alabama Ethics Commission. Because it's an on-going investigation, city officials declined to release additional details.
I report. You decide.

My name is Jason Marks. I'm the producer of The Dale Jackson Show on WVNN. I was contacting you in regards to this post to come on the show and discuss it. You may contact me at jason@wvnn.com. Our show is from 6-9am

Jason, thanks for the invitation but I would rather run through hell with a pair of gasoline drawers on than appear on The Dale Jackson show. I am more than willing to discuss the issue here.

Dale Jackson said...

Redeye,

I am willing to give you an audience, you can cry all you want to yourself.

Anonymous, it's not that I lack the courage to back up my point of view "head to head with Dale Jackson", I lack the DESIRE to do so because like you, he likes to bully and attack the messenger instead of the message which turns into a personality driven shouting match instead of a civil debate/discussion of the issue.

Speaking of the issue, if a white a$$ republican had done this an ethics complaint wouldn't have been filed. There have been several instances of far worse behavior by white, republican elected officials without the "false out rage and indignation" this incident is causing.

It is a FACT Showers protested the award of a contract at Thursday nights City Council Meeting and the letter was written to the Ethics Committee on Friday. Coincidence? If African Americans were in the majority and had done this to the lone white member you and I would be screaming bloody murder, as well we should.

Well over 100 billion dollars in high tech contracts have been awarded to minority companies in Huntsville. The day after the storm done people waited over 10 hours for gas and never got it because of the dusk to dawn curfew. The people of Alabama behaved more like the Japanese and less like the residents of New Orleans after this ordeal; I'm very proud of them. If the timing of the complain is in question, that's a SECOND ethics complaint that needs filing; it doesn't zero out the first.

Well over 100 billion dollars in high tech contracts have been awarded to minority companies in Huntsville? You mean 100 billion over the century? And does this include women owned business? How many Billion dollars in high tech contracts were awarded to non minority companies?

The people of Alabama behaved more like the Japenese and less like the residents of New Orleans after the storm because their GOVERNMENT didn't let them suffer and die for 5 days and appoint HECK of JOB Brownie as director of FEMA.

People had to wait in line for gas but it could have been worse. Ask the people who lost loved ones and everything they owned. This is trivial BullPoo. As I said before there are lot's of things to file an ethics complaint about but this ain't it. This is partisan, political, Witch Hunt. I'm ashamed of my city.

I won't raise my voice or yell, we can have a civil discussion. The invitation is still open.

I will make a deal with you... we will discuss the gas issue and then then issue of the wrecker deal.

Redeye said...

It's not about raising your voice or yelling DaleJackson, it's about the personal attacks, name calling and insults.

The so called gas issue is manufactured outraged designed to rile up the "base". Mission Accomplished.

What do you know about the Wrecker Contract?

Dale Jackson said...

I know Showers is upset because they didn't go to his District and the bidder from his district was not the lowest. The other bid is from in the city and lower.

No personal attacks needed, just facts. When can I pencil you in.

Redeye said...

Who owns the companies involved, and what was the "unethical behavior" Showers accused the awarded company of being involved in?

Again, thanks but no thanks for the invitation. I don't listen to your show, I don't support your advertisers/sponsors, or your politics.

Why don't you ask Councilman Showers to appear on your show so he can give his side of the story?

Richard Showers should be FIRED PERIOD. There is a double standard in the black community! Where is the outcry from the Huntsville N.A.A.C.P.? I'm sure they would have an opinion or a march if it were a white councilman!!!!

Redeye said...

concerned Huntsville resident, it is up to the people who hired Richard Showers to determine when and if he should be fired or not.

I submit this wouldn't have happened to a white council member.

Showers, like you, has been invited. Showers, like you, is a coward.

You can go back as far as you want... I won that battle and will win this one too.

You and Showers are cowards.

Redeye said...

Yep you "won that battle" all right. If you can get away with a slap on the wrist for voter suppression with the State Seal of Approval and calling Rep. Laura Hall a racist B on the publics airways, Councilman Showers ought to be given treatment for putting less than 10 gallons of gasoline into his daughters car (which he subsequently paid for) but we know that won't happen because Councilman Showers is held to a higher standard.

Huntsville Times on 5-20-11 has a great article where Showers lies and can't man up and take the burden of the blame! He blames others which is like most blacks in today society!!!!! He needs to stand up and just say sorry then I would respect him more!! He should resign! I'm sure the voters will elect him again but he does not deserve it!! We need a good black man to represent us in the North! I am tired of the race hustlers like Showers!!!!!!!!!

Redeye said...

Whats that you say? The all white editorial board at The Huntsville Times has a great article where Showers lies and can't man up and take the burden? I'm shocked! Shocked I tell you! Not.

According the The Huntsville Times Richard Showers should be tarred and feathered for helping his daughter in the aftermath of the Tornadoes but David Blair, Jennie Robinson and Topper Birney need a refresher course on the open meetings law for holding a private school board meeting before the public school board meeting.

You say Richard Showers need to grovel and be for your forgiveness for helping his daughter? Don't hold your breath. Yes, the Vvters who hired Richard Showers are the only ones who can fire Richard Showers. And I'm sure the voters will re-elect him if he decides to run again because he is a "good black man" not a good black liar.

I'm sick and tired of the race hustlers too. :)

Thanks for reading and for your comments.

all whites on the Huntsville Times board.....SO WHAT!!!! Stop with the B.S. that alot of blacks shout. If he did wrong (he did) he did wrong..black, white yellow whatever his race!! I think more blacks need to stand up and stop being drug down by all the yelling and screaming about unfar unjust no blacks on the board etc. Are there any whites on the Huntsville N.A.A.C.P. BOARD? Are there any on the Alabama A&M board or Oakwoods board?NO!!!!!!!!!!!! I do not cry over it though!! You like others do not point that out though!!! I'd like to read some articles that need to be written. ie Why most blacks are in prison! I'll answer that correctly so you do not blame the police judges etc, it's because they committ the most crimes per captia related to race!!!! Go on the Dale Jackson show. Are you scared he will win the debate. I have never listened to the show until I read these comments.

Redeye said...

I find the lack of diversity at The Huntsville Times appalling.

I don't believe Councilman Showers "did wrong" and I would feel that way if it were Mayor Tommy Battle, Councilman King, Council Russell, Councilman Culver or Councilman O.

And yes there are whites who are active and involved in the NAACP on the local state and national level.

And yes there are whites on Alabama A&M and Oakwood University Board of Trustees. As a matter of fact Governor Bentley is the ex officio chair of Alabama A&M and Alabama State University's board of Trustee.

Again, black do not commit the most crimes per capita to race they are CONVICTED of the most crimes per capita per race probably because there are people like you sitting on the jury that believe blacks are criminals just because their black. Take this case for example, Dr. Showers is being convicted in the court of public opinion for helping his daughter, but Dale Jackson got a slap on the wrist for voter suppression with the state seal of approval. But none dare call it racism or a double standard.

So, why are we talking about Richard Showers ethics violations instead of the wrecker contract and the allegations of unethical behavior by the owner of the company that received the contract?

Never mind.
We know.
