Huntspatch Sitty School Daze

Ten, count them, ten, Huntsville City School failed to meet AYP (Average Yearly Progress) last year, and once again the district isn't prepared to meet IEP's,  but that's OK, the inept  black Superintendent was replaced with a competent white one.

So what is the "competent" white superintendent doing to improve student achievement? Let me count ten ways.

1. Sign a $21.9 million dollar contract to convert the district from printed books to a digital textbook learning system.

2. Transfer, fire or run off,  trained, certified, teachers and principals and replace them with Teach for America Teachers in the low achieving schools, and Principals from out of state.

3. Close down the Alternative School and send students to a private, residential, drug treatment program.

4.  Double the legal fees for the district.

5.  Balance the budget on the backs of special education students.

6.  Hire cronies as consults while laying off teachers and support personnel.

7.  Take credit for the inept black superintendent's achievements.

8.  Refuse to answer tax payers questions or address their concerns.

9.  Intimidate the public.

10.  Under estimate the cost of contracts, again.

And what did the competent white superintendent who replaced the inept black superintendent say when asked about the ten schools that failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress?

"Adequate doesn't sound very high to me."

Oh well, I guess it depends on what your definition of adequate and competent IS.

Sigh

Seriously? You can spin the statistics any way you like, but the fact that the "competent white superintendent" - as you put it - is turning the financial situation around with the HCS system should be acknowledged. Your summary of the school system's performance after him only having been in his position for one school year is a little premature to say the least. Give it a few years and see if we are 20 million in the hole and not meeting AYP standards - as we were under your "inept black superintendent" - again, as you put it. Even more important: why are you citing race? Color of skin has nothing to do with it. Quit distracting the issues with racial references; it doesn't matter what color the skin is (or the gender), just that the job gets done satisfactorily in the long run.

Welcome to my blog huntsvillian,
I you had bothered to click on the hyperlinks you will find that your pal Dale Jackson is the one who injected the race and competency of the supertindendent into the discussion.

And I find it interesting that you are willing to give the present Superintendent all the time and resources he needs, and that "skin color" is no longer important.

The district's financial situation was addressed by Ed Richardson before Dr. Wardynski arrived. All Wardynski needed to do was follow the plan Dr. Richardson implemented before he arrived.

The rest of the funding improvements have come Wardynski converting $9 million from Capital Funds to General Funds and from cutting Special Education funding by at least $7 million. (The actual expenses are going to come in at about 8-9 million below budget for 2012 once the final quarter is accounted for.)

In other words, the praise for getting the district out of the financial hole does not belong to either Wardynski or the current school board.

Russ you and I know the facts but when people hear the Mayor and the news media touting Wardynski for turning the school system around they think it's the truth.
