"My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge." Hosea 4:6

SMI Analytical

Taxpayers who  live (if they have no alternative),  work (if they are lucky),  and play (at their own risk), in north Huntsville  are being systematically destroyed from a lack of knowledge, not by choice, by design.

The Huntsville City School Board of Education, enabled by the City of Huntsville, purchased 100 acres of land to build a new predominately African American high school less than a mile from an active rock quarry.
The property, located just north of Pulaski Pike's intersection with Stringfield Road, began as one of four potential sites for the new school. Problems with two of those sites, a 78-acre parcel of land near the intersection of Jordan Lane and Mastin Lake Road and a 100-acre site across Blue Springs Road from the Richard Showers Recreation Center, quickly eliminated them from consideration.
Johnson High could have been rebuilt at its current location off of Winchester Road, but the Pulaski Pike site is twice the size of the current one. Laurie McCaulley, who represents Johnson High on the board, said the current site could become a training ground for public service officers.
Note the article doesn't state exactly what the "problems" were at the other two locations, nor does it state the property that was purchased is less than a mile from an active rock quarry.  If that's not a problem I don't know what is.

To add insult to injury, the BOE violated their own policy and renamed said new school after  Dr. Mae Jemison  despite a massive protest to keep the name J.O. Johnson
Last night the Huntsville City School Board of Education violated their own policy on the Selection of School, Facility, and/or Property Name (Policy 2.9, presented September 5, 2013) by concluding the process and voting on the new names approximately three weeks before they were allowed to do so.
There  has been no coverage of this violation by the media.

There are valid concerns adequate/aggressive testing of the air quality and the potential risk to students, administrators, teachers, and support personnel was not conducted prior to purchasing this property.  There is an increased risk of asthma, respiratory disease, and lung cancer; the same health risk as being exposed to asbestos.
Mesothelioma (or, more precisely, malignant mesothelioma) is a rare form of cancer that develops from cells of the mesothelium, the protective lining that covers many of the internal organs of the body. Mesothelioma is most commonly caused by exposure to asbestos.[1] The most common anatomical site for mesothelioma is the pleura (the outer lining of the lungs and internal chest wall), but it can also arise in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity), the pericardium (the sac that surrounds the heart),[2] or the tunica vaginalis (a sac that surrounds the testis).
Other elected officials speaking against the quarry were Mark Russell, president of Huntsville City Council, Madison County District 3 Commissioner Eddie Sisk, state Sen. Paul Sanford, state Sen. Shadrack McGill, state Rep. Wayne Johnson, Gurley Mayor Rob Sentell, Gurley Councilman Robert Wren.
Their concerns addressed environmental quality of Flint River and Hayes Nature Preserve, unsafe traffic with trucks crossing Norfolk Southern Railroad along a curve, heavy trucks sharing roads with school buses, air quality at two nearby schools and a lack of local governmental control of the quarry operation.
There was a huge public outcry supported by city, county, and state public officials when the superintendent wanted to change the name of Lee High School to the point of telling him he would be making a gargantuan mistake if he changed the name.
"There's been any number of councilman and officials call to inform me that I've made a gargantuan mistake," Wardynski said, to applause from the crowd that made him smile. "Thank you for acknowledging my mistake."
Some of the same city, county, and state officials are silent when it comes to responding to public outcry against changing the name of J.O. Johnson.  As a matter of fact, they are planning a ground breaking ceremony using, I mean, inviting Mae Jemison to put a black face on their deception.
Dr. Mae Jemison's good name is being destroyed by a lack of knowledge.
It's me, RedEye.  Have your ears been burning lately?  The reason I ask is because you are being talked about 24/7 in the Rocket City.  In case you haven't heard, the Superintendent and the Huntsville City Schools Board of Education, voted to replace the name James Oliver Johnson  with  your name, despite opposition  from the majority of Alumni, parents, students, and the community.  The reason the BOE states for wanting to replace the name  J.O. Johnson with  your good name is because you are well....black  and because JOJ is a so called  "failing" school. In other words, they don't want to fix the problem, they want to slap your good name on it and call it fixed.  Nod.  Nod. Wink.  Wink.

The public outcry by citizens in north Huntsville is being suppressed.
Purposely withholding vital info from the people/community that will be affected is a nice nasty way of saying......"You are not valued as a person".......We know what is best for you, even though we need your tax dollars........We will do what we want in your community because we don't live in your community.
Lord, please help us.

You say they want to slap a name on the new school and not fix the problem. How can you fix students who do not want to learn, who continue to score low causing the school to fail? The teachers all have college degrees and have the background to teach the same as the teachers at the non failing schools. To me it comes down to what no one in North Huntsville will say, It's the kids that cause themselves to fail. They all have the same tools as other schools as well as free will! It starts at home so if the parents are not involved it makes it worse!

How do you know students don't want to learn?

The failing test scores. It's not the teachers they are all qualified the same as the teachers at the passing schools. Is there a way for you to pull arrest and discipline problems and compare failing school vs non-failing schools. If so I'd love to see it. I would also venture to say the failing schools have more discipline problems which in turn can affect grades, study habits etc.

DARYAL Pinchon represents the mentality of those with the power to run the school system. This is the mentality they represent and cater too. This is why we are where we are.

Really. Teachers hired by the school system have to have a college degree. Am I right on that? If I am then they all of them have done what they needed to do to be certified teachers in Alabama! CAN YOU FIND A WAY TO GET THOSE DISCIPLINE AND ARREST NUMBERS? Then we can talk about it. I do not like it that the North Huntsville majority black schools are failing but I know it's not the white mans fault!! I think you do not want to know if discipline and arrest are higher in the predominately black schools because stats don't lie and I know I am right!! It is what it is! 85% of the problem in our schools is our own kind not Dr. W. or the evil school board etc etc etc!!!

^Casey Wardynski is that you?^

No it is me Daryal Pinchon! I stated the TRUTH. I see it daily and have seen it for years! I as well as my circle of friends feel the same. I am not saying that it's 99% the problem but I do think it's at least 85% of the problem. We need to change the mentality of our youth in order to make schools better. It starts with them not the teachers, principals etc!! They have to want to learn and place school as a priority instead of the "street life"!! I ask again can you get stats for discipline and arrest for schools and compare the failing schools to the non-failing schools. I would bet my paycheck that the failing schools have more arrest and discipline problems! This is a BIG reason they fail because they would rather be in the halls, skipping school, disrupting class etc etc etc. By they I do not mean all students!

Redeye said...

Why wouldn't the children "want to learn"? How do you know school is not a priority instead of the "street life"? Where are the teachers, administrators and other people we pay to run our schools? If students are in the halls, skipping schools, disrupting class etc. it's because they are being allowed to do these things by the adults who are supposed to be in charge.

Anonymous said...

It's obvious due to the failing schools. They are in the hall as well trying to get them to class. Teachers that have to stop class to deal with a disruptive student are taking quality time away from the ones who are there to learn Again I repeat if you know how to get arrest, stats or both from schools PLEASE DO and post them. I will say it again I GUARANTEE the schools with the most discipline problems and arrest will be at the failing schools!!!!!!!!

I will not name any names or schools but I have 2 very close friends who work in the schools and have been there for years. They will tell you the same things. They also say certain schools are HELL and others are a resort based on discipline and problems that take place on a daily basic. Yes they are both black 1 female and 1 male.!

Black students, especially boys, face much harsher discipline in public schools than other students, according to new data from the Department of Education.

Although black students made up only 18 percent of those enrolled in the schools sampled, they accounted for 35 percent of those suspended once, 46 percent of those suspended more than once and 39 percent of all expulsions, according to the Civil Rights Data Collection’s 2009-10 statistics from 72,000 schools in 7,000 districts, serving about 85 percent of the nation’s students. The data covered students from kindergarten age through high school.

One in five black boys and more than one in 10 black girls received an out-of-school suspension. Over all, black students were three and a half times as likely to be suspended or expelled than their white peers.

And in districts that reported expulsions under zero-tolerance policies, Hispanic and black students represent 45 percent of the student body, but 56 percent of those expelled under such policies.

The department began gathering data on civil rights and education in 1968, but the project was suspended by the Bush administration in 2006. It has been reinstated and expanded to examine a broader range of information, including, for the first time, referrals to law enforcement, an area of increasing concern to civil rights advocates who see the emergence of a school-to-prison pipeline for a growing number of students of color.

According to the schools’ reports, over 70 percent of the students involved in school-related arrests or referred to law enforcement were Hispanic or black.

Daryal, Why don't you do your own research instead of telling RedEye to do it?

You make arguments declaring that they are the truth (cap lock stuck?), yet by asking RedEye to provide discipline and arrest figures, you are admitting that your position is based on your own anecdotal opinion, rather than any empirical data.

Here's Huntsville's City School Pupil Services Report to get you started:

Our friend Daryal won't admit it, but his posts all say the same thing: that black students (or more precisely, young black male students) are the problem. This takes focus off the schools themselves, their administration and that of the school system itself and places all the blame and onus on the student. It's no wonder why he wants Redeye to bust out the statistics - those same stats reinforce Daryal's argument.

Meanwhile, no one has to wonder why HCS is content with shunting its failed teachers and staff off to the "bad" majority-black schools and why HCS continues to thumb its nose at majority-black North Huntsville. Instead, the knuckle-dragging contingent gets to blame black boys for being prison-bound screw-ups, while the school system that's supposed to educate them goes about its merry way with its actual job of boosting home values in nicer neighborhoods throughout the city.

I know there ares those who need help (welfare) but many make it a lifestyle!!

Lies, lies and damn lies.
"They face more discipline because they violate more school rules!! The reason they are more likely to be suspended than whites is because they broke more rules! Again the more arrest is because the blacks committed a crime!"

Lies and the lying liars who tell them.

Mack my post disputes our friend FED UP's claim but of course they won't read it because they can't handle the truth, they would rather believe a lie.

I read it and it was written by a white liberal apologist! I can post some from others that show blacks in schools are suspended because they violate more school policies. Also crime goes with it. No one wants to address the victims in the crimes committed by blacks. Most victims are black so how is it discrimination? I see it in North Huntsville yes I live here weekly! They blame the police because they robbed, burglarized someone or were selling drugs on the corner. Look at the Jet Pep on University and the Chevron its an once marker everyday for drugs! Again I am not Fed up. I am Daryal and I've invited you numerous times to join me on Facebook. I have nothing to hide. Do you?

Redeye said...

Blacks don't violate more school policies than whites, but they are suspended more than whites. You don't want to face facts, and that's fine.
