Alabama is number one, y'all. Gov. Bentley was the first to step up and declare our great state the last place on earth the Syrian refugees are welcome.

Uh, would someone please tell these elected *cough cough* officials the Federal Government is the largest employer in the state of Alabama, and,  Sweet Home Alabama get's more FEDERAL dollars than any state in the UNION?  EYE mean, really, what are they thinking? Talking about biting off your nose to spite your face.

Congress should use the power of the purse to prevent the president from pursuing his plan to resettle Syrian refugees in the United States, Alabama's two Republican senators said Tuesday.

Maybe there is a method to their madness, but don't say anything when the President of the United States of America uses his executive power and his veto pen as the big payback.

Just in case you missed it, our Governor was interviewed on CNN this morning pontificating about his stand on the state line to keep Alabamans safe from them there Muslims, EYE mean, Syrian refugees.  He really didn't have a good reason to offer, so he named dropped that he was with Condolezza Rice yesterday, who allegedly told him Syria should set up a refugee camp over there to contain them.

This is the same Condolezza Rice who was the National Security Advisor that gave pResident George W. Bush a daily briefing one month prior to the 9/11 attacks that said Osama determined to attack inside the U.S. and didn't know what that meant.  The same Condolezza Rice who was the Secretary of State before, during and after Hurricane Katrina.

Governor Bentley also name dropped the director of Homeland Security, and the FBI, both of which are federal agencies, as in the federal government, as in the federal government he plans to obstruct and defy in order to keep Alabamans safe from them there refugees.  The same federal government that is the largest employer in Sweet Home Alabama.

More Alabamians have died from guns, natural disasters, and because they don't have access to quality affordable health care than from Muslims, EYE mean, refugees.  But don't let a little thing like facts get in the way of bigotry in the name of The Lord.  Our Governor kept saying he was at war with his heart and his head, and his head was winning.  As someone who claims to be a Christian doesn't he realize baby Jesus and His parents were refugees?

To make the irony more explicit, Bentley will be joined at the conference with the Japanese by Martin Luther King III. An Alabama Governor is meeting with the Japanese – a population that America once forcibly detained for fear of the color of their skin – and is accompanied by the son of a man who Alabama once detained for fear of the color of his skin. The only thing that could make it more ironic would be if they convened in Huntsville, a city that prospered as the result of Alabama welcoming German scientists in the wake of World War II.

Just in case there is any doubt, President Obama has explicit statutory authorization to accept foreign refugees into the United States. Under the Refugee Act of 1980, the president may admit refugees who face “persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion” into the United States, and the president’s power to do so is particularly robust if they determine that an “unforeseen emergency refugee situation” such as the Syrian refugee crisis exists.

Despite popular and uniformed opinion, Alabama is still a part of the United States of America.  Sir.

The problem for Jindal, Abbott and the other governors opposed to admitting refugees, however, is that there is no lawful means that permits a state government to dictate immigration policy to the president in this way. As the Supreme Court explained in Hines v. Davidowitz, “the supremacy of the national power in the general field of foreign affairs, including power over immigration, naturalization and deportation, is made clear by the Constitution.” States do not get to overrule the federal government on matters such as this one.

EYE Don't Think #SweetHomeAlabama is on any refugees' list of desired destinations

Go away, kids. Alabama is too scared of you.

So, here we go again.  You know the drill.  Make Alabama proud by inflaming fear and bigotry in the name of The Lord.

Charming, just charming. Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has hit on a way to posture about the Paris terrorist attacks that feeds right into a whole bunch of the worst stereotypes about his state. Bentley “will not stand complicit to a policy that places the citizens of Alabama in harm’s way,” which is to say he has announced he’s refusing to host Syrian refugees in his state. You know, the Syrian refugees fleeing daily violence as bad as or worse than the Paris attacks.

Yep. This is the same Governor who places the citizens of Alabama in harm's way everyday because Obama.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley used part of his State of the State Address on Tuesday to offer a full-throated defense of his decision to reject Medicaid expansion, one of the key components of President Barack Obama’s health care law.
Under the Affordable Care Act, the federal government will pay 100 percent of the cost of expansion for the first three years and then 90 percent after that.
“But how can we believe the federal government will keep its word?” said Bentley, one of a number of governors who took advantage of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling to turn down the deal. “The anything but Affordable Care Act has done nothing to gain our trust.”

EYE wonder if the Syrian Refugees could play football would they be welcome in #SweetHomeAlabama?

I'm Back! Did you miss me?

 

In case you haven't noticed I've been away from blogging for a spell due to my real life colliding with my blogging life. But that's good thing because I needed a mental health break from the EVIL, INSENSITIVE, HEARTLESS world of cut throat politics. On the down side, I had to depend on the liberal media (snark) for news and information, which means I have to play catch up to find out what's really going on in the world.

Looks like there's a  lots of political intrigue going  in Sweet Home Alabama including a lawsuit filed, but not served against fellow blogger Legal Schnauzer.  You can read all about the intrigue yourself, but this comment  on Legal Schnauzer caught my RedEye:

True, a lot of life time tax payer Republicans have lost confidence and trust in the Alabama Republicans' political party line style of managing their government, and the Declaration of Independence addresses this specific loss of respect by the people, that they should throw off such a government, as a last resort.
Therefore, Murph is probably thinking it's about time us Little People got off our asses and found a strong independent candidate[s]. Why, because regardless the dissatisfaction among the Republicans, many are never going Democrat

So let me see if I have this right (pun intended), republicans are dissatisfied  but they are never going democratic....Why?  What's so bad/wrong/ with the democratic party?  Inquiring minds want to know.

According to Left in Alabama, the GOP failed in their attempt to replace a democrat with  republican and cost tax payers $320.000.00 to boot.  So much for GOP fiscal conservatism.

On a sad note,  Alabama State Representative Demetrius Newton has gone on to Glory. Rest In Peace thy good and faithful Servant. You will be missed.

Long before Demetrius Newton started his 27-year career representing part of western Birmingham in the Alabama House of Representatives, he was fighting against segregationist laws in courtrooms around the state.
Newton, 85, whose death was announced this morning, filed a number of lawsuits during the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s that sought an end to segregationist laws - including separate waiting rooms at train stations, the inclusion of African Americans on juries, and the rights of protestors to march.

 Remember when the Supreme Court overturned Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act because things had changed in Sweet Home Alabama?  The more things change, the more they don't.  Oh well, at least Alabama is still #1 when it comes to college football.

Did George Zimmerman and the media try to pull off a Weapon of Mass Distraction?  The reason I ask is because Zimmerman's domestic dispute was all over the mainstream media, but I didn't hear/see a peep about the The Medical Examiner in the George Zimmerman case preparing a $100 million dollar suit   He reportedly will allege that the medical examiner, the state attorney's office and Sanford Police Department were all biased against Trayvon. Bao was fired last week for undisclosed reasons.

"He says their general attitude was that he [Martin] got what he deserved," Attorney Willie Gary told Channel 9.
Gary said Dr. Bao was made to be a scapegoat and was wrongfully fired from the medical examiner's office. He said his client was prepared to offer proof that Martin was not the aggressor.
"He was in essence told to zip his lips. 'Shut up. Don't say those things,'" Gary said. 
Gary said prosecutors never asked Dr. Bao a question crucial to their case.
"He wanted a question that would have allowed him to explain to the jury with scientific evidence how there was no way Trayvon Martin could have been on top of George Zimmerman," Gary said.

Meanwhile in Florida  an African American Florida man was arrested and tried for, get this, walking on the wrong side of the road. 

A Florida man is suing the sheriff’s office in the county where he lives for throwing him in jail and putting him on trial for walking on the wrong side of the road.
According to First Coast News, Bobby Wingate, 36,  was walking along Oliver Street when he was approached by an officer asking questions. Andrew Bonderu, Wingate’s attorney, says his client responded to the officer’s questions by telling him he didn’t have time to talk.

On the national front, after President Obama's address to the nation regarding Syria the Talking TeeVee Pundit Heads insist he do, I still oppose War with Syria.

All life is sacred. All of us are sickened by the images of dead children lined up in rolls on the ground. No one condones such atrocities. If the U.S. bombs Syria, even more innocent children, women and men will die. One cannot save people by bombing them.

Last week marked 50 years since Martin Luther King, Jr gave his “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington. Here is my report card on how America has done on the particular issues he raised in that speech all those years ago:

Speaking of silencing dissent, the Congressional Black Caucus has gone from being told to stop whining and start marching to STFU and Support President Obama or else.  Hate to say it, but despite the fact a majority of African Americans oppose military action in Syria,  I predict the CBC will give President Obama the authority to drop bombs on Syria because we are the most loyal democratic voting block, and because  we can be counted on to carry the water for our country as we always do, even for a country who uses and abuses us. We don't want to make the first African American President look bad.

The new national survey by the Pew Research Center, conducted Aug. 29-Sept. 1 among 1,000 adults, finds that Obama has significant ground to make up in his own party. Just 29% of Democrats favor conducting air strikes against Syria while 48% are opposed. Opinion among independents is similar (29% favor, 50% oppose). Republicans are more divided, with 35% favoring air strikes and 40% opposed.

Hump Day Hypocrisy Diary Trifecta Edition

There is so much hypocrisy going around I don't know where to start.  All I can say is the Talking TeeVee Pundit Heads must think We The People have amnesia, or, they think we are stupid enough to believe everything they tell us just because they keep saying it over and over on TeeVee. 

The TTPH's have the nerve to trot out some of the same ones who enabled Bush and Dick to take us to war based on DEAD WRONG INTELLIGENCE and NO EXIT STRATEGY,  telling us Syria is not like Iraq.

 Yeah right.

Republicans like to bomb people.  That's messed up.  House majority leader John Boehner backs President Obama when it comes to dropping bombs,  but when it comes to access quality affordable health care, public education, jobs, women's right, or sensible gun control legislation, not so much.

 How could Obama let himself be pushed into this catastrophe you ask?  IMHO, and mine only,  our President suffers from Bipartisan Syndrome,  he keeps reaching out to republicans, and they keep sawing his arm off.  What part of republicans do not like him, and will never like him doesn't he understand?  We F--king Retarded, and Professional Left tried to tell him, but did he listen to us?  Noooooooo.

 Speaking of The Left, Writing for the Huffington Post,  Frank Schaeffer says The Left and the Right Entirely Missed the Point of Obama deferring Syria to Congress.

 The pundits mostly are trying to figure out the president's tactics short term on the "next war" or "what this means politically." But Syria isn't the point. Politics isn't either. Our Constitution is. What they don't get is that irrespective of the outcome now in this case, President Obama has injected an old/new note of constitutional restraint into the American war making game that is revolutionary for our times.
It's a very big story that the media seems to be missing by concentrating on the short term situation, Syria, and politics. The real story here isn't Syria--it is presidential power. President Obama just put our country's good ahead of his power and handed a little of presidential power back to We The People. Thank you Mr. President.

Uh, I don't think we should be thanking Mr. President for handing a little bit of presidential power back to We The People just yet. House minority leader Nancy Pelosi said she supported the president and sent a letter to fellow Democrats urging that they fall into line. But she conceded, “In my district, I don’t think people are convinced that military action is necessary.”

Did that last sentence make you cringe? Cause a little cognitive dissonance?
It should, because the progressive caucus, as opposed to the predominately white progressive blogosphere, has been the strongest supporter of the president. But progressives of all stripes are scratching their heads over the presentation of the evidence and the logic behind the strategy.
Nancy's right. Progressives need to see more.

I agree with the rude pundit

Across this America, city after city and state after state, the basics of daily life (and death) are being wrecked, in part, by our failure to spend on things that matter to Americans, things that actually would make this a great country. A nation that has a city that, even briefly, couldn't provide death or birth certificates because it didn't have paper is a nation that has absolutely no business spending millions, perhaps billions of dollars to bomb Syria just because the mad president there did something insane.

Fix America First because we still have a great distance to go.

I have not been speaking publicly about the relationship between drones abroad and the War on Drugs at home. I have not been talking about the connections between the corrupt capitalism that bails out Wall Street bankers, moves jobs overseas and forecloses on homes with zeal, all while private prisons yield high returns and expand operations into a new market: caging immigrants. I have not been connecting the dots between the NSA spying on millions of Americans, the labeling of mosques as “terrorist organizations” and the spy programs of the 1960s and ‘70s – specifically the FBI and COINTELPRO programs that placed civil rights advocates under constant surveillance, infiltrated civil rights organizations and assassinated racial justice leaders.

Call me a Cynic but...

 Fool me once....can't fool me again.  Actually I wasn't fooled the first time our government, enabled by the media, told us they had proof of weapons of mass destruction being used in another country against innocent civilians, so I'm sure you can understand my ahem skepticism this time.  President Obama is ready, willing and able to attack Syria based on ahem intelligence, but he's moving like a turtle when it comes to the Justice Department criminally prosecuting George Zimmerman.

At first I thought  the party of NO (aka TeaPublicans) would save us from attacking Iraq, I mean Syria, but then I remembered that republicans haven't met a war they didn't like.  They may vote against access to health care, education, food stamps, jobs, and other ahem social issues, but when it comes to bombing people they are full speed ahead.

Why I oppose military intervention in Syria

This is not about humanitarianism. It is about geopolitics and the control of natural resources. If Syria was not located in an oil rich region, there would be no calls for military action. Thousands of innocent civilians are dying in the Central Republic of Congo, Nigeria and many other countries around the world. Yet, the US does nothing. Clearly, this is not about protecting civilians.

If Obama loses in the House and bombs Syria anyway, I wonder if that will set off the impeachment. Hey, something's got to, right? Imagine Obama being impeached on foreign policy grounds after Nixon, Reagan, and Bush weren't. That would be crazy -- and yeah, I could imagine it.

I’m deeply skeptical that Congress will approve.
Why? Because they approve of Assad’s actions? Because they believe we shouldn’t involve ourselves?
No. I believe they won’t because of Obama Derangement Syndrome. Because the primary hurdle such a vote will have to overcome is the number of people who will vote NO simply because President Obama is the one who’s asking.

Conciliatory Rhetoric as a ruthless strategy-Syria Edition   The outcome of that battle far outweighs the importance of what we do in Syria. And on this one, President Obama wins either way. Either we get a Congress that steps up to the plate, or he has demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are incapable of doing so.


Making a bad situation worse

Let's say we go in there and blast Assad and his entire government straight to the pit of hell:

QUESTION: What happens next?

ANSWER: We don't know.

This is not a good idea. 

For the record, just because I am against attacking Syria doesn't mean I don't support President Obama, it means I don't follow him blindly and without question. ~RedEye tiptoeing away from the computer to go pray for peace.

Hallelujah!  Here comes Congress to save the Day!  Everybody knows if President Barack Obama is for it, republicans are against it, and this is one of those rare times I agree with the TeaPublicans.  We shouldn't be spending money we don't have attacking Syria.  I bet even  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would be against drones dropping bombs on innocent people.

 Maybe we should help the Syrian Refugees instead of killing Syrians

If, as Juan Cole recommends, Obama decides to pivot and move to diplomacy after losing British support, focusing on the plight of refugees and using our airlift to send them aid would be smart politics as well as good policy.

We have our own problems over here, I wish the Obama Administration would be as Hawkish about domestic issues as they are foreign affairs.

Shouldn't the problems in Detroit,  Chicago,  New Orleans,  health care and the economy come before killing more people in Syria?

Hell Yes, they should!
