The goppers still have a diversity problem and more

Just because the gop added two African American members (and I use the characterization loosely) to it's formally Lilly white house congressional ranks doesn't mean they aren't still bigots, nor does it mean African Americans will be flocking to the grand old party like flies to molasses. You see, contrary to the popular, but misguided opinion of some, democrats, strike that, real democrats will vote for someone based upon their political views rather than the color of their skin.
Which party is more successful in electing minority candidates from non-minority districts? Not Democrats. A small little embryo now, this has the potential to morph into a huge problem for Democrats down the road.

Where would the gop be without minority members to carry the water for them?
Congressman-elect Allen West (R-Fla.), who said he plans to become the only black Republican in the Congressional Black Caucus, accused the organization of failing the black community by promoting dependence on government welfare programs.

"The Congressional Black Caucus cannot continue to be a monolithic voice that promotes these liberal social welfare policies and programs that are failing in the Black community, that are preaching victimization and dependency, that's not the way that we should go," West said on Fox News Friday. "And those are not the types of principles that my mother and father raised me with in the inner city of Atlanta, Georgia."

The gop elects two a$$ clowns but the democrats have a diversity problem? I don't think so.

This means Democrats lack a bench of minority candidates who can run for statewide office, no less national office. Most Democratic minorities make a career in the House, accruing seniority and influence but lacking broad-based political support.

The prime culprit in preventing minorities from having broader appeal is the process of gerrymandering majority-minority seats. It has guaranteed blacks and Hispanics representation, but at the cost of creating seats where candidates would have to appeal to a broader constituency, white and non-white alike. For decades, such districts were judicially mandated; in the South, officials still need clearance from the Justice Department to decrease the proportion of blacks voters in a district.

So now we get to the real nitty gritty, it's them there gerrymandered majority-minority voting districts that's the problem for white folks. Newsflash! The majority-minority seats weren't created where candidates would have to appeal to a broader constituency i.e. white folks because they know the only way white folks will vote for a black candidate is if they share their political point of view. The majority-minority districts were created so black folks would have someone to represent their interest, and not let white folks decide who their leaders would be.

The logic behind gerrymandering stems from the Civil Rights era, when white voters were highly unlikely to vote for African-American candidates, so districts needed to be drawn so black voters could elect their own to Congress. It was effective—and necessary—to bring diversity to a homogeneous body. But now, the consequence of these contortions comes at great expense to Democrats and civil rights leaders alike.

It's not consequences of these contortions that come at a great expense to Democrats and civil rights leaders, it's the consequences of white folks who would rather lose than stand with black folks.

“It’s not in the best interests of Southern voters, it’s certainly not in the interest of people who want a non-racial politics focused on substance and identity, and the content of a candidate’s character, not the color of their skin,” said outgoing Rep. Artur Davis, D-Ala., a centrist black congressman who lost his state’s gubernatorial primary this year.

I guess it depends on what the definition of a non-racial politics focused on substance and identity IS considering His 7th District gave Barack Obama nearly 73 percent of the vote in 2008.
Davis' majority black congressional district in Alabama is one of the poorest in the country, boasts the state's highest HIV/AIDS rates and is the epicenter of the state's syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia epidemic, "among the highest in the country", reports WKRG.

Says Davis of his vote against expanding health care to his district's poor and low income residents: "I just don't see this as a racial vote or a racial issue."

Of course it isn't. Priorities, priorities ...

Davis and his ilk are a scourge, they shortchange their constituents to be better accepted by white conservatives.

Apparently, history means nothing, disparities in education, housing, health, crime, economics in the black community are not significant enough to tackle for a politician whose campaign was "never about race".

Never about race my Donkey. It's all about race. It's always about race. Davis tried to ride Obama's coat tails to the governors mansion while stabbing him in the back. White Alabama democrats and conservatives saw his candidacy as symbolic, a way to make America forget about Alabama's shameful racial history. In other words they wanted to put a black face on the problem then claim they were moving forward on substance.
In one of the reddest of the red states, Sparks ran an issue-oriented campaign that offered solutions to the hopes and fears of voters threatened by further job loss and inadequate health care. Voters were enticed by Sparks advocacy of gambling as a job-creator and source of government funding. And, most recently, many feared the horror of the BP's oil drilling catastrophe.

Furthermore, significant segments of the Democratic base suspected Davis of making self-serving deals with their Republican enemies to help his own career.

Some white Alabama democrats and conservatives saw Davis's candidacy as symbolic, a way to make America forget about Alabama's shameful racial history. In other words they wanted to put a black face on the problem then claim they were moving forward on substance.

There is no nice way to say this, so I'm going to be blunt, Artur Davis was who the conservative wing of the democratic party wanted to be the defacto leader of African Americans instead of Joe Reed. In other words, they were so busy trying to screw Joe Reed they screwed themselves right out of the majority in Alabama State Legislature.
Artur Davis has to walk the fine line in this campaign: convince the big middle of the electorate to judge him on the issues -- he's a fairly moderate reformer with broad appeal -- without turning off voters who may have followed Joe Reed's advice in the past. He needs to convince those voters to judge him on the issues instead of listening to Reed's advice.

What's the problem with listening to Reed's advice you ask? Well for one thing, he's largely responsible for creating them there gerrymandered majority-minority voting districts in Alabama which gave black Alabama taxpayers representation in the legislature and the United States House of Representatives. Reed has spent his life fighting for black representation, Davis has spent his taking advantage of Reeds work. This was a move to replace Reed, who fights for the rights of black folks, teachers, unions, etc. with Davis who goes along to get along and is not threatening to the white power structure.

Long time, respected Alabama Civil Rights Attorney Jerome Grey breaks it down in relation to Bombinghams contested District 54 election between Patrica Todd and
Gaynell Hendricks.
In 2000, the district was drawn with a 63 percent black majority. In the years since, gentrification has shrunk that proportion, and some estimate the current black population at about 50 percent. In his letter endorsing Hendricks, [Joe] Reed warned black community leaders that if they elected a white candidate, the district could be redrawn without a black majority.

“If a district became a Republican district, Republicans would fight like the dickens to keep the district Republican,” said Jerome Gray, field Director for the ADC. “The same is true if a district is majority black. Black activists and black leaders are going to fight for the dickens to keep it majority black.”

While some have attacked the ADC’s stance as reverse racism, Gray said that white Democrats simply will not spearhead the same issues as their black counterparts. He gave the restoration of felony voting rights as an example.

And there you have it. Black activist and black leaders are going to fight for our rights. The question is will white democrats fight with us or fight against us?

WWRD?~Update

From my inbox~They should do the HONORABLE thing and resign! If they resigned, a special
election would be called to fill their empty seats. They could run as "new"
Republicans in a Primary which they might not win, or they could wait four
years, while "proving" themselves in their new Party and run as R's then. Even
if they won the Republican Primary as four-year "card-carrying R's," at least
two of them (in my opinion) would have difficulty winning the General Election
as Republicans.

There is no honor among thieves.

What would republicans do if members of their party were jumping ship in order to give their opposition a super majority in the State House?

A. Would they file a lawsuit against the members for perpetrating a fraud on republican voters and the republican party?

B. Would they call for the immediate resignation of the party members?

C. Would they elect a tired old man with a mean streak as their party chair?

D. Consider it a purge and say good riddance?

E. All of the above?

Statement on Party Switchers
In the biggest national Republican electoral sweep in well over a generation some Democrats survived and won re-election. The gentlemen changing parties today had just won re-election as Democrats, not Republicans; and they did so with the money, time, votes and volunteerism of thousands of Democrats from across the state. Their switch today baffles the voters and upends the process of elections. “These gentlemen have been my friends for a long time and I respect each of them personally, but I am saddened and hurt by their decision today, said Democratic Chairman Joe Turnham.”

The Republican members of the legislature have put on a full-court press to push all white Democrats to change parties after the election. Instead of respecting and working with the Democrats of the House and Senate who were fairly elected under their own party label, Republicans have with today’s announcement made it clear that they want to run Alabama as a partisan-only supermajority and will seek to impugn the rights and voices of Democrats who do not switch and come over.

The tough tasks of governing in Alabama in these lean days will require the contributions of every single member working in unison to solve problems. If today’s party-switchers felt themselves to be irrelevant in the minority, then that is a wrong assumption. They now join a majority that will be responsible for upcoming massive cuts to classroom teachers, healthcare, law enforcement and other basic services. Their switch will aid and abet draconian redistricting plans that will hurt their former Democratic Caucus members.

If today’s switchers truly believe in the ideals of the Republican Party and the democratic process; they could resign, then seek re-election in a special election in a Republican Primary and General Election and let the voters of their districts validate their switch today. Each of them should also immediately refund the monies given to them by their Democratic Caucus.

Notes:

Rep. Steve Hurst received over $50,000 from his former Democratic House caucus in his bid for re-election.

Rep. Alan Boothe received 2,644 votes November 2nd from voters in his home county of Pike who voted a straight Democratic ticket.

Rep Mike Millican received 1,103 straight Democratic votes in his home county of Marion alone.

Both Representatives Mike Millican and Alan Boothe had no Republican opposition.

One of Rep. Leslie Vance’s district counties, Russell, voted 5,094 straight Democratic tickets to 2,209 straight Republican tickets.

Rep. Vance won with more than sixty percent of the vote.

Just so we are clear about what at stake here, if the 4 Democrats flip flop to the gop they will have a super majority, meaning they pass any bill they want without opposition.

Remember what Hank Sanders said to CNN's Anderson Cooper?
Cooper asked Sanders what evidence he had that the Republican opponents would take Alabama back to Jim Crow days. Sanders said, "Well, there's a certain mean spiritness that's out there, not only in Alabama but it's in America. And that makes this election extremely important."

Real Democrats get it. Now run tell THAT Homegirl!

Daily Kos blogger brooklynbadboy makes a compelling case for why real democrats can't wait any longer. It's time to rebuild the democratic party.
Times are tough. The working people of this country are not just losing their jobs, they are losing their homes and in some cases, their entire way of life. Their dignity. Their respect. Men can't earn a decent living so that they can raise their heads with pride around their children.

Women can't get a break from their increasing burdens. Children are piling up their disappointments. Our great men of commerce are weak and corrupt. Our defenders are weathered by war, deployed far from home. The political institutions that are tasked with governing are broken. The men who lead them are inadequate to the challenges before them. It is very difficult to look at the state of our union and find it strong. We the people have got to do something about it and it has to start now.
Progressives just don't get it.
Yes, this was a Republican wave year, but Alabama Democrats have more problems than just the painful economy and low approval ratings for Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi. We had no coherent message and no recent record of supporting policies that help people.
WTF do you mean we had no coherent message and no recent record of supporting policies that help people? WTF is WE? Health care reform helps the 46 million Americans without access to health care. But DINO Artur Davis couldn't support that. Anti Hate Crimes legislation help protect our gay and lesbian sisters and brothers from harm. But DINO Artur Davis couldn't support that either. So WE democrats had a record, it was just drowned out by the DINO's/progressives/blue dogs/moderates/independents/conservatives/dixiecrats that have infiltrated the democratic party and is spreading like a cancer.

Alabama democrats, strike that, REAL Alabama Democrats aren't in denial about why Alabama Democrats took such a whipping on Nov. 2. It was the stoopid racism which was enabled and appeased by the progressive/conservadem wing of the Democratic party. Democrats took such a whipping because Alabama Democratic Party elite decided to fight with a right leaning blog and suppress real democratic voices.
'Comfort the disturbed, disturb the comfortable' (0.00 / 0)
I believe Redeye is the heart and soul of this little corner of the universe. I have little to add to the Redeye viewpoint and comments because they are consistent with my world view.

No one says it better than Redeye. The links back it up!

Attacking the messenger is so creepily Republican.

Redeye comforts me!

Does Redeye disturb you?
Democrats took such a whipping because Y-O-U and Y-O-U-R-S gave them the switch.

Don't blame REAL Democrats. WE did our part. We aren't the ones who are "out of touch".
We held our nose and did what the republicans did and voted a straight ticket. If the conservadems had done joined with us, instead of being against us, democrats wouldn't have taken a bloodbath. But noooo, conservadems just had to whup State Senator Hank Sanders for his mad as hell robo call to DEMOCRATIC voters and put his "abrasive wife" in her place. That will learn them about dealing the race cared in every hand. Yessum. *Snark*
Why we can't wait to kick the infiltrators out of the big tent (emphasis mine);
We do not have time to wait for politicians to learn how to do the job effectively. They may never learn. We do not have time to wait 10, 20 or 30 more years while our people and planet fall into the abyss. We cannot confine ourselves to years and years of seemingly pointless phone calls and emails. Our people are dying. Our people, the Democrats, the people who didn't show up for this election, are suffering. We have to link up, walk into that meeting and start getting our own people in positions of authority. We need power in order to fight back. We've got to seize control of this party and change the rules so that it cannot be taken away ever again. It can be done, it should be done, and it will be done if we have the stomach for it.
Yep WE (real democrats) got a mugging, an alley butt-whipping, but most of it was due to fact the majority of white democrats would rather lose than stand with the democratic wing of the democratic party, but also I admit part of it was the fault of the Alabama Democratic Party leadership (or lack there of), they had a plan, pander to the right at the expense of the base. That really sent a message to real democrats how out of touch they were with real democrats. You know the democrats who are not worried about me and mine, but who are concerned about the least and the left out. Those who don't have access to a quality public education. Those who don't have access to quality health care. Those who can't afford to buy groceries. Those who aren't informed. Those who are marginalized and minimized. Those that understand that by the grace of God goes I.

Real Democrats aka The Professional Left get it loud and clear. We can't wait any longer. It's time to rebuild the democratic party, but first we have to kick the Posers out of the big tent before they burn it down.
White privilege and power have been setting the Democratic agenda and electoral strategy for far too long in this state. They drank their own Kool-Aid in the run-up to this election. It poisoned their thinking as it has poisoned our party. They chose to rely on manipulation, race baiting, short-sighted election year gimmicks and smearing real liberals and democrats in favor the rightwing/dixiecrats/moderates/conservatives and enabling and appeasing the right wing instead of using their time in power to promote responsible public policies. Although many of those voted down last night had little to do with this fiasco, the people at the top of the Democratic party got the result they richly deserved. Unfortunately it's the little people at the bottom who will suffer the consequences. You know, the people without jobs, homes, access to quality affordable health care. Poor single mothers and their children. Elderly citizens who have to decide between buying food or buying medicine. You know, the least of these.

You helped light the match that essentially burned our party to the ground yesterday. How do we rebuild the Alabama Democratic Party now you ask?

Clean house from top to bottom. Get rid of the posers and the infiltrators. You're either with the democratic party or you're against the democratic party, that includes black/brown folks, women, our LBGT sisters and brothers, labor and public educators. You're either for all parts of the democratic agenda or you're for none of it. We elect leaders who don't think black voters are stoopid and who try and take advantage of them. We elect leaders who are not afraid to stand up to the right wing bully's. We elect leaders who don't take a blog, I mean butter knife to a gun fight. We elect leaders who will bring us together not divide us. That's how we get OUR party back on track Missy.
Now, run and tell THAT Homegirl!

Bring. It. On. Update

Dag, I step away from the blogosphere for a little while and all hell breaks loose on the political front.

Update: Sign the petition to put Keith Olbermann on the air now!

MSNBC suspended Keith Olberman without pay because he didn't disclose contributions made to three democratic congressional candidate. Psst KO! Don't you know thanks to the Supreme Court ruling all you have to do is incorporate (become a corporation)and you can donate as much money as you want. And, you can do it anonymously. Or you can be a right wing republican TeeVee Talking Head.

Even if you set aside the hypocrisy of the Joe Scarborough double-standard, Phil Griffin's explanation for suspending Keith Olbermann doesn't add up.

Griffin says Olbermann violated a policy requiring NBC News reporters to obtain approval for making political campaign donations that "jeopardize his or her standing as an impartial journalist." But Olbermann isn't an "impartial journalist" and doesn't claim to be. Neither is Joe Scarborough, a point that NBC itself made in excusing Scarborough's donations.

Yep. There is something rotten in the Cotton over at MSNBC.

MSNBC suspended host Keith Olbermann today, following revelations that he made campaign contributions to three Democrats in the elections -- a violation of MSNBC policy.

But a search of OpenSecrets.org reveals that MSNBC host Joe Scarborough and MSNBC contributor Pat Buchanan have also made contributions to political campaigns.

If the democrats had gonads (which we know they don't)Before the 112th Congress convenes, the Senate of the 111th would pass the 400 bills sent to them by the industrious House… That's what the republicans would do. Another thing the republicans would do is pick the member with the biggest gonads to lead them. But do the democrats do that? Nooooo. They want to throw the member with the biggest gonads under the bus in favor of the member with no gonads. The Talking TeeVee Pundit Heads are breathlessly talking about the brewing fight between Steny Hoyer (Blue dog), Jim Clyburn (too nice) and Nancy Pelosi to be Minority leader.

Let me say right off the bat I am behind Nancy Pelosi 100%. Why should she fall on the sword? She did her part. Plus that, she does not cut and run. If mild mannered Harry Reid, who barely won re-election can remain Senate Minority Leader, Nancy Pelosi can be House Minority Leader. If Robert Gibbs, David Axelrod, Eric Holder, Tom Villseck and Valerie Jarret can keep their jobs, Nancy can keep hers. Plus that republicans are skeered to death of Nancy Pelosi.

Just because democrats lost the majority and squandered a filibuster proof Senate doesn't mean we should roll over and play dead. On the contrary it should make us fight harder. There are three things in our favor.
1. Democrats are still the majority in the Senate so they can check any craziness that comes from the house.

2. President Obama is still in the White House and has his trusty VETO pen and signing statements.

3. Most of the Blue Dogs are history. Progressives prevailed. The democratic minority is going to be as effective as the republican minority was because they will be UNITED in their opposition. Snicker

We don't need a mealy mouth or a Blue Dog as our leader, we need a proud, courageous liberal leading us. Like lamh32 said;

We need Nancy knocking heads now more than ever, since we are no longer in the Majority. Nancy seems like the ONLY one who can do that and who has a credible chance of being elected.

Sign the petition in support of Nancy Pelosi.

Hmmm...I wonder who 7th district Congresswoman Terri Sewell will vote for?

On October 19th, U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer, the Majority Leader of the House, will be coming to Birmingham as Terri's special guest at a fundraiser for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). She's also made financial contributions to other Dems in Alabama and is campaigning with Alabama Democrats up and down the ballot to prevent a Republican takeover.

It. Is. On.
