Eric Garner:  Tall, Dark, and Threatening
Eric Garner may not have been a saint. Pro-law enforcement media, under the guise of fair and balanced reporting, has made a point to note that Garner had a fairly extensive arrest record (not all convictions; there is an important difference). Still, even as he was no stranger to the criminal justice system, Garner had been in custody over 25 times…and somehow managed to live to tell about it before being choked to death. I say this because for those who would want to push the “he was a known perp who resisted arrest” angle, it is much harder to understand why someone familiar with the system would “resist” to that degree unless there was indeed a life-threatening level of discomfort. Generally, telling someone “I can’t breathe” counts as life threatening.

FOLLOW DIRECTIONS! COMPLAIN TO INTERNAL AFFAIRS LATER! LIVE ANOTHER DAY!

If he was committing a crime then he should have followed verbal commands! A lot of blacks would be saved a world of hurt if they just listen!

Look in the mirror and say that so you can see how you sound.

NORMAL people follow directions and listen when given instructions by police!

What are police suppose to do when someone refuses to comply with what they are telling them? Should they get back in their car and drive off?If they did imagine how much more violence we would have. Hey I just stabbed that guy and the police told me to put my hands behind my back and I refused so they drove off....lol Let me go stab someone else, rape someone, rob someone etc etc

What was wrong with what Daryal was saying that he needed to look in the mirror and see how it sounds. The ACLU says if you are being arrested not to resist. =

From the ACLU:

IF YOU ARE ARRESTED
Do not resist arrest, even if you believe the arrest is unfair.

IF YOU FEEL YOUR RIGHTS HAVE BEEN VIOLATED
Remember: police misconduct cannot be challenged on the street. Don't physically resist officers or threaten to file a complaint.

From the video, you can see that Eric was resisting arrest. The officers used a chokehold that they had been told not to use and are being charged with a homicide. by the DA.

Where does it say police can kill you if you resist arrest?

Brian said...

It doesn't. But deaths have occurred when somebody resists arrest. People have died from being tased, people have died from mace, people have died from pepper spray. It's why people are told not to resist. You can't fight for your rights when you're dead.

Eric Garner's death has been ruled a homicide. It's now up to the District Attorney to decided whether or not to file charges. I do believe the officers are responsible for the death. They used a technique that is prohibited by the NYPD.

Just because deaths have occurred when someone resist arrest doesn't make it right (pun intended). This has got to stop.

Brian said...

Do you think the police deliberately killed Eric Garner? Yes, somebody dying while being arrested is bad, but does that mean that we stop arresting people that are resisting arrest?

Redeye said...

No, it means the police should stop killing people when arresting people for resisting arrest.

Did the police intend to kill Eric Garner because he was resisting arrest?

Eric Garner's death has been ruled a homicide. He died as a result of being placed in a choke hold by police.

Yes, it was ruled a homicide. All murders are homicides but not all homicides are murders. Right now the DA is trying to decide whether or not to charge the officers and to do that he has to figure out their intent.

When they put Eric Garner in the choke hold, did they intend to kill him?
