What if Wednesday

What if someone watched the watchdogs?

Thomas Jefferson made a notable observation about the role of the newspaper in a democracy:
The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. -- Letter to Edward Carrington, 1787.
What if Education is the next Civil Rights movement?
As the memorial to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is unveiled this week, tens of thousands will assemble at the spot where 38 years ago, Dr. King delivered his "I Have a Dream Speech," and taught Americans a lesson in tolerance, equality, and perseverance.
But for millions of African-Americans, that dream has been deferred. Unemployment, which was 31 percent among black teenagers in 1963 and 32 percent among black teenagers in 1993, is now near 40 percent. Among all blacks, the rate of unemployment is nearly double that of whites.
But the biggest disparity -- which can be directly linked to joblessness and poverty -- is in education, where America as a nation has fallen behind 17 other industrialized nations. But among blacks, it's even more dismal, as our youth are more than 25 points behind whites in reading according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
What if Jon Stewart were President?
“The poors,” Stewart calls them. Obama needs to recognize that the world economy is shuddering to a halt because the global rich are so focused on wealth protection into a distant future that capitalism can’t find the money to function and grow. The time that his paltry stimulus bought the system has run out. As they did by going after Saddam instead of Al Qaeda, the political class is again setting off weapons of mass distraction—this time, by going after “spending” and the deficit instead of unemployment and the foreclosure crisis.

The time for muddling through—for saying you can see “both” sides of the argument—is past. Obama is so smart, right? Then he must know this, too.

What if The newest political strategy is to turn the African-American community against the first black president.
There are forces working very hard at making sure that President Obama is defeated in 2012. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if they took an oath or signed a pledge to that effect.

The newest political strategy is to turn the African-American community against the first black president. The idea is to get black folks to scream at the President and to threaten to withhold our support come November 2012. Due to the very high unemployment rate in the black community, this could be an easy sell.
What if it's working?
Dear Mr. President,

Every four years one question drives those of us that are not blinded by religious pandering and single minded dogma to the polls. This question is the one question that outside of speeches, kissing babies, American flag lapel pins, standing on stage with the carefully set up all American family with the canned answers is the one thing that is important. "Am I better off today than I was four years ago?" I can say without hesitation, HELL TO THE NO, I am worse off than I was four years ago and millions of people agree with me. I fall into the category of the long term unemployed who can't find a job but who has the misfortune of being educated, therefore I am "overqualified" or "qualified" but not the "highest qualified" if we are talking about federal jobs, which usajobs.com should be labeled a complete joke web site. Oh, but you decided to implement a hiring freeze for federal jobs, didn't you? Smart.
What if republicans take control of our government again?
The Associated Press reports that a New Jersey Republican lawmaker resigned after his wife sent "an offensive and racist" email to the Democratic state Senate campaign of nine-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis.
What if people fall for Manipulative role-reversal at it's finest?

It's implied that blacks are now the "most racist people ever." This comes from a group of people who were responsible for rampant legal and extralegal discrimination against blacks, native Americans, Hispanics and other ethnic groups they didn't like. Whenever non-whites broach the subject of color-aroused mistreatment, the Freeper/Teabagger whites immediately accuse them of being racist pricks for even bringing up the subject of race in our newly post-racial society. Those people got themselves a darkie in the White House -- what more do they want?

It's the aggressor calling the victim an "aggressor" while painting himself as the "victim." Manipulative role-reversal at it's finest.
What if the winners are turned into the losers and the losers are turned into the winners?

KING 'MONUMENT TO GREED'

WASHINGTON -- The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s family has charged the foundation building a monument to the civil-rights leader on the National Mall about $800,000 to use his words and image -- and at least one scholar thinks that Dr. King would find such an arrangement offensive.

The memorial is being paid for almost entirely through a fund-raising campaign led by the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation.

"I don't think the Jefferson family, the Lincoln family [or] any other group of family ancestors has been paid a licensing fee for a memorial in Washington," said Cambridge University historian David Garrow, author of a Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Dr. King. ". . . [He would've been] absolutely scandalized."

Financial documents revealed that the foundation paid $761,160 in 2007 to Intellectual Properties Management Inc., an entity run by the King family. They also showed that a $71,700 "management" fee was paid to the family estate in 2003.

I wonder how much Cambridge University professor and Pulitzer Prize winning author David Garrow made off Martin Luther King, Jr? Dr. King lived a modest life and his family had nothing after his murder. I'm not mad at them for charging for their father's words and likeness. IMHO, they didn't charge enough.

Who was in his room at the hotel where he was killed? Why does no one ever talk about that part of his life??!!!!

Any notes from you on the passing of a great American....Elizabeth Wright?

But of all Elizabeth wrote, this powerful passage is perhaps my favorite.

When the white population falls below the 50% mark, the days of whites running interference for blacks will be over. And so will those special laws biased towards safeguarding perquisites for the “Disadvantaged,” which can be mighty expensive to enforce.

Again, what are the odds that those 18th century injunctions devised by those funny little men in britches and waistcoats will prevail, once the polyglot new Americans from Asia and Central and South America begin to flex their political muscle?

So many blacks and their white liberal gurus failed to appreciate those Anglo-originated laws based on “self-evident truths” and the consent of the governed, which were flexible enough to take under their protection the nation’s former slaves. Who will there be to ensure that jobs and scholarships and government contracts, and the surfeit of other entitlements, will be available for a people who have grown used to looking to others for slices from the economic pie, instead of baking their own share of it?

Once what’s left of constitutional law is gone, partly out of neglect, because the story of the Constitution and its creators will no longer be taught in the various Chinese-Indian-Latino-Arab colored school systems, a new corner will be turned. If blacks think they’ve been mistreated at the hands of whites, just wait until the affirmative action, set aside party is over—when there is no one to insist that they get undeserved perks, or have a “right” to intrude themselves into places where they are not wanted.

The new dominant ethnics come to this land with their own sob stories of oppression. Unlike whites, they are hardly likely to fall over one another to apologize for past wrongs. Nor are they likely to spend their time in Congress concocting new laws designed to discriminate against their own sons and daughters in favor of blacks.

“Reparations,” did you say? Just wait until the first move is made to un-name and re-name some of those Martin Luther King, Jr. boulevards.

For those of you who do not know Elizabeth was black. She was the the editor of Issues and Views.

Thanks Granny! Same here.

When I look bacK on the historic election in 08 and can't help but wonder how the winners were turned into the loser. Hope was hijacked and the media drove the get away car.

I should be thanking you right about now. If I hadn't decided to research Elizabeth Wright, I wouldn't have posted this: http://macklyons.blogspot.com/2011/08/its-all-about-company-you-keep.html

Why do you see them as "run down" and "crime ridden?" Is this the continuation of the meme that black cities, islands and nations simply default to crime ridden cesspools without the direct intervention and leadership of benevolent whites?

Some people actually thought slavery was a good thing for blacks.

The majority of the highest ranked crime cities are black!

I never said or think slavery was a good thing! I just do not agree with continually saying sorry for something I nor most white Americans did or had nothing to do with. I see blacks continue to do stupid things flash mobs etc. I continue to see the entitlement attitude. I see the race card being played to often and still griping about Jim Crow etc. It's time to move on whites were also slaves but we do not keep crying about it!!! I read your blog read this.
