It's 2016, EYE am Back!

My annual mental health break is over and EYE am back, raring to go! First, EYE would like to wish my readers a Happy New Year!  It is my HOPE 2016 will be the year for CHANGE we can believe in. If EYE offended anyone in 2015 by Keeping it Real,  EYE apologize.  NOT.  It's only going to get worse in 2016. The first day of the January marks the last day of Kwanzaa. EYE will continue to keep my eyes on the prize, be a voice for the voiceless, refuse to be marginalized, minimized and undervalued, and, to speak my mind with passion, courage and Faith.  That said, let's get busy.

So much stuff happened while EYE was on break EYE don't know where to start.  Since EYE keep an EYE on the Reddest of the Red States let's with a year in review of Sweet Home Alabama, where football dominates, public education, jobs, environmental protection, ethics, and  quality of life for children,  not so much.

Much Ado was made about the brawl between Birmingham Mayor William Bell and City Council Member Marcus Lundy.  The media tried to make them the poster boys for Scumbags  and incompetence (code for stupid), but EYE must remind them, this is what elected officials do in Alabama.... and, it's not just the African American elected officials.

So, while the white, EYE mean, right wing of the Alabama Democratic Party tried to pull a coupe on Joe Reed and his bunch so white folks could regain control of the party, Alabama republicans were dismantling the already pitiful public education system.  If democrats spent half as much time fighting republicans as they did Joe Reed and his bunch, maybe the state wouldn't be first in football and last in everything else.

Who knew the reason white democrats stayed at home in 2010 was because they believed Obama hadn’t done enough so they decided to stay home to “punish” Obama for not being the Savior they thought they’d elected in 2008 and stuck all of us with GOP majorities in Congress).  If anyone should have stayed home in 2010 because Obama was not the Savior they thought they elected in 2008 it should have been African American democrats, but we didn't, because we don't have the luxury of not voting.  The right to vote is sacred to African Americans.  It's steeped in blood, sweat, tears, and sacrifice.  We can always be counted on to vote.  White democrats not so much.

African Americans vote even when we don't have anyone to vote FOR.  But that's going to change for me.  EYE will no longer vote a straight democratic ticket.  Just because someone is on the democratic ticket doesn't mean they are a democrat.  And no, an African American Pastor who moved to the state two years ago, who was an Independent (code for republican) before he was a democrat, whose deep personal belief is life begins at conception, and preserving second amendment rights  doesn't cut it. If EYE wanted a someone who shared his point of view EYE would be a republican.

Lot's more to talk about, stay tuned.

Hump Day This and That

Some Rights are more important than others
Left in Alabama proudly announces The Birth of the Alabama Democratic Majority for those who want to contribute  without worrying their money is going to travel expenses for the Executive Board members and staffers to be working at ADCWhere is Branch Rickey when you need him?  Sigh

Legal Schnauzer;   What's that you say?  A black female judge in Alabama draws suspension for actions that draw a pass for a white, male judge?  I'm shocked!  Shocked I you.  Not

The Attack Machine;  Speaking of IOKIYAR (It's OK if you are republican) Poor Lowell Baron, the Democrat who was replaced by Shadack McGill, the republican lawmaker who compared abortion to destroying an Eagle Egg ( among other things),  is under attack for being out of office. SMH and RME

Crooks and Liars;  Uh, remember Paul Kevin Curtis,  the Elvis Impersonator who just happened to be a Democrat  who was arrested for sending Ricen laced letters to President Obama, Senator Wicker and several other Mississippi politicians?  Well guess what, he was released from custody and all charges were dropped, but here's the kicker.....Curtis may have been framedOnly in America...

Quote of the Day:  Ricen Suspect released: "I don't even eat rice."  LOL!

Geek Pavaler wants parents of Huntsville City School Students to know they can opt of Star testing "Simply put, unless you have been ruled unfit to be the legal guardian of a child, no one has the right to force your child to do anything that you do not wish for your child to do".   Mega Fist Dap to Russ

Abagond“Blacks are just as racist as whites if not more so!” It is a common thing whites in America say. I do agree that blacks are racist, but just as racist? No way! Not even close.

The Rude Pundit;  Republicans Are More of a Threat to America Than BombersYa think?

RedEye's Abbreviated Week in Review

So  much gun violence, so little time to write about it.....real life duties and obligations are calling.

Para Quoting The Rude Pundit, if you wanted to make a case for mental illness as the primary cause of gun violence all you had to do was watch the Senate Judiciary Committee  hearings on gun violence in the Wild Wild West, I mean, the United States of America on TeeVee.

Today's Must Read
10 Pro Gun Myths Shot Down (pun intended)

Meanwhile in Sweet Home Alabama, the republican state Senator who replaced the Democratic state Senator said he will make protecting the unborn his top legislative priority.  I guess that means children who are born on their own.

If it's February it's  Black History Month!  Have you ever wondered why Black History month is the shortest coldest month of the year?
Yes, February is the shortest month of the year. However, Kwanzaa runs from December 26 to January 1, and no sooner is it over, than we begin to think of Martin Luther King whose birthday is celebrated on the second Monday in January. And right after the King holiday, we begin to prepare for Black History Month. Therefore, the 64 days between December 26 and February 28, are, in reality, Black History Season. Thus, for the bulk of the winter we have the opportunity, and the encouragement, to celebrate and meditate upon what we have accomplished against all odds.

I Choose Neither~edit

Left in Alabama commenter bluebearcat makes one of the most profound analysis of the divisions within the Alabama Democratic Party I've heard in a long time, and also makes a compelling case for the need for some deep democratic soul searching, in response to mooncat's accusation There's a double standard for black office holders and office seekers in Alabama whenever they get outside of minority districts,

What bluebearcat said, emphasis mine;
Here's a couple of differences....
1) There's a difference between an incumbent taking a symbolic vote in hopes that their constituents won't be represented by a Republican and a congressman from a safe Dem district actually putting a major reform in jeopardy in hopes that he will get elected to higher office. Both are disappointing, but one took a meaningless action for survival; the other jeopardized health care reform (and, yes, voting against health care reform while its eventual outcome was in doubt did in fact jeopardize its passage).

2) Davis campaigned as a trans formative figure for Alabama politics; he often spoke about the exact same hypocrisy and corruption that you refer to above. But, if he was serious about making things better, MAKE THINGS BETTER. Davis had a chance and showed us the content of his character. Actually, he had multiple chances and each time let his district and his supporters. Whether it was hate crimes or the Justice Department, Artur Davis turned an impressive legacy as a congressman into a sad example of gutlessness in the face of ambition.

My argument is not that the established ADP bureaucracy is somehow better than Artur Davis. They are not. My argument is that Artur Davis is every bit as bad. It is a false choice to say that we must choose between the regressive and antiquated status quo of the ADP and the neo-Conservative ideas of Artur Davis. We should choose neither. There is a future for progress in this state, but it ought not be built on capitulation before the fight has even begun.

For the life of me I cannot understand the dogmatic defense of the indefensible by those who call themselves progressives. When Artur Davis voted against health care reform, he voted against his party and his constituents for his own political gain. It was more important for him to pander to white voters than to do right by the people who elected him. He betrayed the public trust. As bluebearcat said it showed the true content of his character, and IMHO voters were right to reject him at the ballot box. If any other elected official had betrayed their constituents in that manner I feel safe in saying he/she would be called out and rightly so. Why does Artur Davis get a free pass because of the color of his skin? What does it say about white voters if they only way they will support an African American candidate is if he panders to them at the expense of the people who elected him?
15 of 16 Congressional Black Caucus members from the South voted in support of the legislation. Without the nearly unified and unanimous support of the CBC, it is likely health care reform would not have had a chance, which brings us back to Artur Davis's opposition to health care reform.

Davis is running for governor of Alabama and even though his constituents are among the Yellow Hammer state's poorest and most in need of comprehensive health care reform, he voted against their needs to position himself as a moderate. He knows that in order to win the votes of white moderates (he'll never win the votes of white conservatives) he must show that he is against the expansion of government. Yet, throughout his career—moderate by CBC standards, liberal by white Alabama standards—Davis consistently supported the CBC agenda, which encourages the government to actively improve the lives of their constituents.

Essentially, Davis threw his current constituents under the bus for his own political advancement.

White Alabama democrats have some deep soul(pun intended)searching to do. Speaking only for myself, I'm tired of the "we want black democrats to be seen but not heard" mentality of the party elite. I'm tired of the African American vote being taken for granted. I'm tired of conservatives running as democrats to take advantage of the black vote then governing like a conservative republican. I'm tired of democratic candidates pandering to the right at the expense of the traditional base. I'm tired of African Americans being treated like second class citizens with a nod, nod, wink, wink. To quote Dr. Joe Reed; You cannot curse Bubba and Cooter, Big Man, and June Bug in the daytime and beg them at night. If I wanted a republican representative/governor/senator I would vote republican.

I don't have to be member of the Alabama Democratic Party, I chose to be a member of the Alabama Democratic Party because I believed we shared goals and values. I choose not to be a member of a democratic party who would rather lose than stand up and fight for what is right.

The Fear Factor

I don't know about you but I'm skeered not to vote on November 2, 2010.

I'm skeered people who think it's OK to wrestle a woman down and stomp on her head because she's a liberal will be in charge of our government.

I'm skeered gun-toting Tea Partiers and curb stompers will be in control of our government.

I'm skeered the Alabama State House will be controlled by legislators who think it's OK to punch their political adversaries in the face.

I'm skeered our government will be controlled by the Adult Bully's who think it's OK to trample on Constitutional Rights for political gain.

I'm skeered the United States Senate will be controlled by Senators who have liberal bloggers arrested because they are liberals.

I'm skeered the United States House of Representatives will be controlled by Representatives who want to repeal the health care reform bill.

I'm skeered our country will be controlled by Tea Party Loyalist who are biased against Blacks, Latinos, immigrants and Gays.

I'm skeered our School Boards will be controlled by members who think like this and consider the AEA and the NEA the enemy.

I'm skeered our country is going to be controlled by Climate Deniers.

I'm skeered our country is going to be controlled by legislators who compare Black People to Dogs on Welfare.

I'm skeered our country will be controlled by a party that is not big on preparation, or, well, work.

I'm skeered our country will be controlled by the reactionary rather than the rational.

"Now, more than ever, we need rationality in the U.S. Senate -- we need people
who are fighting for real solutions, not those fighting to stop progress."
~

"This is 2010 -- a year that Democrats passed historic health insurance reform,
put in place the strongest consumer protections ever proposed, and enacted
legislation that provides tax cuts and expanded credit for small businesses.
It's a year that we've spent going to work for the American people while
Republicans have done everything they could to block our progress."

I'm skeered Congress will be controlled by the people who sent our sons and daughters to war based on DEAD WRONG Intelligence again.

Skeered yet?

VOTE!
