Question: Are we a nation of cowards?

Who gets to determine if something is racism, or, if someone is a racist, or not...the person(s) who has been the victims.....or the person(s) who has not?  I ask this question for insight into a post I'm trying to write.

Click and read the hyperlinks and think about  it.  I would love to hear your answers if you are brave enough to share them.
WASHINGTON (CNN) – Eric Holder, the country’s first African-American attorney general, called the United States “a nation of cowards” Wednesday for failing to candidly talk about matters of race.
In a speech to Justice Department employees commemorating Black History Month, Holder said average Americans remain uncomfortable with race-related issues and need to do more to confront them head on.
“Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial we have always been and we, I believe continue to be in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards,” Holder said.

Eric Holder is absolutely right - there are a remarkable number of cowards in our society. All I have to do is observe.

I can walk into any weapons shop or gun show in town. Unusual to see women or black- or brown-skinned men shopping. The ammo shelves are almost empty. The lines get longer every time the President says something remotely sensible. The clerk inevitably tries to sell me some cheap gizmo I don't want.

I have taken to rebutting Obama-hate rhetoric with a statement that he is half white, and maybe that is what is wrong with some of his political backsliding, particularly when it comes to the banking industry or world peace. I get called all sorts of strange names, and all those nice church-going ladies put on their mean faces and never speak to me again. My life has become very quiet since I started this.

Talking about statistics of selective law enforcement tends to clear out the line ahead of me at the local diner.

Racist cowards, all. I am elderly, white, and no threat to these morons, but I guess the truth makes cowards of the non-believers.
